Why Your AC Is Freezing Up (Ice on the Lines)

Ice on your air conditioner during a Texas summer almost always comes down to one of two things: not enough warm air reaching the coil, or low refrigerant. Here's why it freezes, how to thaw it safely, and how to keep it from happening again.

It's one of the most counterintuitive HVAC problems there is: it's 102° outside, and there's ice on your air conditioner. A frozen coil is common in our long Central Texas cooling season — and the good news is that the causes are few and the first steps are safe to do yourself. Here's the plain-language version, including the one thing you should never do.

What a frozen coil actually is

Your indoor evaporator coil runs cold by design — cold enough that humidity in your home's air condenses on it and drains away. It stays above freezing only because a steady stream of warm room air keeps blowing across it. Take that warm airflow away (or drop the refrigerant pressure too low), and the coil gets cold enough that the condensation turns to ice. Once ice forms, it blocks airflow even more, so the problem snowballs — a little ice quickly becomes a solid block, and your house stops cooling.

The two root causes

Strip away the details and a frozen AC comes down to two things. Knowing which one you're looking at tells you whether it's a five-minute fix or a service call.

  • Restricted airflow (most common). A clogged filter, closed or blocked vents, a dirty blower wheel, or leaky, undersized ductwork starves the coil of the warm air that keeps it from freezing.
  • Low refrigerant. A leak drops the pressure in the coil, which drops its temperature below freezing. This one needs a licensed tech — and the leak must be found and sealed, not just recharged.

How to safely thaw it (and what to check)

  1. Turn cooling off, fan on
    Set the thermostat to Off for cooling and the fan to On (or Fan Only). Moving room-temperature air over the coil melts the ice faster — and safely.
  2. Replace the air filter
    A clogged filter is the #1 cause we find. Put in a fresh one — see air filters & MERV for the right type.
  3. Open and unblock the vents
    Make sure supplies and returns are open and nothing (furniture, rugs, a closed door) is starving the system of return air.
  4. Let it fully thaw
    Give it one to three hours (longer if heavily iced). Watch for water around the indoor unit and keep towels handy near the drain pan.
  5. Run it and watch
    Switch cooling back on. If it cools normally and stays ice-free, airflow was the culprit. If it refreezes, stop and call — that points to refrigerant or the blower.

How to stop it from coming back

  • Change the filter on schedule. Every 30–60 days for a 1-inch filter in our dusty summer. Check it monthly.
  • Keep airflow healthy. Don't close off too many vents, and have leaky or undersized ducts addressed.
  • Get an annual tune-up. A pro checks refrigerant charge, the blower, and the coil before summer — see the tune-up checklist.
  • Fix small refrigerant leaks early. A slow leak gets worse and now costs more after the 2025 refrigerant change.

When it's time to call a pro

If the coil refreezes after a filter change, you see oily residue on the refrigerant lines, the outdoor unit hums but the fan won't spin, or the ice keeps coming back, those point to a refrigerant leak or a failing blower — both need a licensed, EPA-certified technician. Why is my AC freezing up in the summer?
It sounds backwards, but ice on an AC in 100°F weather almost always means not enough warm air is reaching the indoor coil — usually a dirty filter, blocked vents, or a weak blower — or the system is low on refrigerant from a leak. How long does a frozen AC coil take to thaw?

Will adding refrigerant fix a freezing AC?
Only if low refrigerant is actually the cause — and low refrigerant always means a leak that must be found and sealed, never just "topped off."
