What humidity control means

A properly working air conditioner does two jobs at once: it lowers temperature and pulls moisture out of the air (dehumidification). As warm, humid air passes over the cold indoor coil, water condenses out and drains away. When that second job falls short, your house can be cool and still feel sticky.

What healthy humidity looks like

Aim for roughly 40–55% relative humidity indoors. Above about 60% feels muggy and encourages mold, dust mites, and that "clammy" feeling; too low feels dry and harsh. In our humid summers, the constant battle is keeping it from creeping high.

Why your home feels sticky (the real causes)

  • An oversized AC. The #1 hidden cause. It cools so fast that it short-cycles off before removing much moisture — cold but clammy. Right-sizing from a load calculation prevents it.
  • Poor airflow. Restricted ducts or a dirty filter reduce the system's ability to dehumidify.
  • Low refrigerant from a leak hurts both cooling and moisture removal.
  • Fan set to "On" re-evaporates condensate off the coil between cycles, putting moisture back in the air. Use "Auto."
  • Outside-air infiltration from leaky envelopes and ducts in humid weather.

The fixes that actually work

  • Right-size the equipment. Correct sizing is the foundation — bigger is not better.
  • Fix airflow first. Clean filter, sealed ducts, open returns — often enough on its own.
  • Set the fan to "Auto." Free, and immediately helpful.
  • Consider a whole-home dehumidifier for stubborn cases or humid shoulder seasons, integrated with your system.
