Why AI Can't Price (or Diagnose) Your HVAC

It's the most natural thing in the world to type "how much is a new AC?" into a search bar or an AI chatbot — and you should. The answer you get back is a useful starting point. The trouble starts when a homeowner treats that instant number as a real quote, or lets a chatbot talk them into replacing a system that just needed a $40 part. AI is a fantastic way to get oriented. It is not a substitute for someone standing in your home with a gauge set.

What "pricing" an HVAC system actually requires

A fair, accurate HVAC price isn't a lookup — it's a small engineering exercise. To put a real number on your job, you have to know things that simply don't exist in any online form:

• A Manual J load calculation. The correct system size comes from your home's actual square footage, ceiling heights, window count and orientation, insulation, and our local design temperature — not a per-square-foot guess. (See Manual J and tonnage in the glossary.)
• The condition of your ductwork. Leaky, undersized, or crushed ducts can add thousands to a job — or quietly waste a third of your cooling. A photo can't measure static pressure; a tech has to look.
• Your electrical and line-set. Panel capacity, breaker sizing, and the existing refrigerant lines all affect what a new system needs.
• Local code and permits. Each city in our corridor has its own rules and fees, and the install must be permitted and inspected. An AI doesn't know your address's jurisdiction.
• The 2025 refrigerant reset. The switch to R-454B changed equipment and pricing across the whole industry — last year's online numbers are already stale.

Why AI diagnoses go wrong

The same gap shows up when you ask AI why your system is acting up. A chatbot can list the usual suspects — a failed capacitor, low refrigerant, a dirty coil — and that's genuinely helpful for knowing what's safe to check yourself. But it can't take a measurement. Two systems with the identical symptom can need a $40 fix or a $2,500 one, and only readings at the equipment tell them apart. The danger isn't that AI is useless; it's that it sounds confident while missing the one detail that changes the answer.
