Emergency & After-Hours HVAC Help in Leander
AC or heat suddenly down? Take a breath — a few safe checks fix the most common problems in minutes. If they don't, we offer after-hours repair across the Leander corridor. Here's exactly what to do.
First, a Few Safe Checks
Try these before you call
These are safe for any homeowner and solve a surprising share of "emergencies" in a few minutes. If they don't fix it, you'll know it's time for a pro.
AC won't cool
- Set the thermostat to COOL and a few degrees below the room temperature, and swap in fresh batteries.
- Replace a dirty air filter — a clogged filter is the #1 cause of weak airflow and a frozen coil.
- Check the breaker for the AC. Reset it once. If it trips again, stop and leave it off.
- Clear leaves, grass, and debris from around the outdoor unit, and make sure indoor vents aren't blocked.
- See ice on the refrigerant lines or the unit? Turn the system OFF (set the fan to ON to help it thaw) and call — running it iced up can damage the compressor.
No heat
- Set the thermostat to HEAT and above the room temperature, with fresh batteries.
- Replace a dirty filter — restricted airflow can trip the furnace's safety limit.
- Confirm the furnace switch (it looks like a light switch near the unit) is ON, and check the breaker.
- Check for a tripped condensate float switch or a full drain pan, a common automatic shutoff.
- On a heat pump, brief cool air during a defrost cycle is normal — persistent cold air is not.

When to Stop and Call
These mean it's time for a technician — now
- You smell gas (a rotten-egg odor) or anything burning or electrical.
- The breaker trips again right after you reset it once.
- There's ice on the unit, or water is pooling near the furnace or air handler.
- You hear grinding, banging, or loud metal-on-metal sounds.
- The home is getting dangerously hot or cold — especially with kids, older adults, or pets.
