How Your Home Air Conditioner Actually Works
Your AC doesn't make cold — it moves heat out of your house. Understanding that one idea, and the handful of parts that do the work, makes you a smarter homeowner who can tell a real repair from a sales pitch.

Most people picture an air conditioner as a machine that "makes cold air." It doesn't. Your AC is a heat pump in the literal sense — it grabs heat from inside your house and carries it outside. The air feels cold because the heat is gone. Once that clicks, the rest of the system makes sense, and you can spot the difference between an honest diagnosis and an upsell. Here's the whole thing in plain language.
What an air conditioner really does
An AC is a heat-moving machine. Using a fluid called refrigerant, it absorbs heat from the air inside your home, then releases that heat outdoors. Nothing is "created" — heat is simply relocated. That's why your outdoor unit blows warm air: it's the heat from your living room, leaving the building.
The five parts that do the work
A standard Central Texas home has a split system — some parts inside, some outside. Five components do almost everything:
- Evaporator coil (indoors). Cold refrigerant runs through this coil; warm indoor air blows across it and gives up its heat. This is also where humidity condenses out of the air and drains away.
- Blower (indoors). The fan that pushes air across the coil and out through your ducts to every room. Weak airflow here means weak cooling everywhere.
- Compressor (outdoors). The "heart" of the system. It pressurizes the refrigerant and pumps it around the loop. It's also the single most expensive part to replace.
- Condenser coil (outdoors). Where the captured heat is released into the outside air. It needs clear airflow — weeds, lint, and dust here choke cooling.
- Thermostat (the controller). Reads the room and tells the system when to run. A miscalibrated or poorly placed thermostat causes comfort complaints that aren't really an AC fault at all.
The refrigerant cycle, step by step
Every cooling cycle is the same four moves, over and over:
- 1. Absorb. In the indoor evaporator coil, low-pressure refrigerant absorbs heat from your home's air and boils into a gas.
- 2. Compress. The outdoor compressor squeezes that gas, which concentrates the heat and raises its temperature and pressure.
- 3. Release. In the outdoor condenser coil, the hot gas dumps its heat to the outside air and condenses back into a liquid.
- 4. Expand. A metering device drops the pressure, the refrigerant turns ice-cold, and it heads back indoors to start over.
How AC moves heat
- Cool, low-pressure refrigerant — soaks up heat from the air in your home.
- Hot, high-pressure refrigerant — dumps that heat into the outdoor air.
Your AC never makes cold — it moves heat outdoors in a sealed loop, over and over. A heat pump runs these same four parts in reverse to warm your home in winter.
Your heating system is the other half of the picture. A heat pump runs this cycle in reverse to warm your home, while a gas furnace heats a different way entirely.
Where it goes wrong (and what each failure looks like)
Knowing the parts tells you what a symptom means. Most "my AC is broken" calls trace back to one of these:
- Restricted airflow (dirty filter, blocked vents, failing blower) → weak cooling, a frozen indoor coil, higher bills.
- Low refrigerant → poor cooling and icing. This almost always means a leak, not "it needs a top-off." Refrigerant doesn't get used up.
- A dirty or smothered condenser → the system can't release heat, so it runs constantly and still can't keep up.
- Electrical parts (capacitor, contactor) → the outdoor unit hums but won't start, or won't shut off.
