Thermostat Guide for Central Texas Homes
The right thermostat settings can quietly save you money all summer — and the wrong ones can quietly cost you. Here's how to set it, whether a smart thermostat is worth it, and why the thermostat is sometimes blamed for problems it didn't cause.

Your thermostat is the steering wheel of your whole HVAC system — a small device with a big effect on comfort and your electric bill. Most homeowners never think about it until something feels off. A few smart habits here make a real difference in a Central Texas summer, and they cost nothing. Let's cover the settings that help, the upgrades worth considering, and the "thermostat problems" that are really something else.
What your thermostat actually does
A thermostat reads the temperature where it's mounted and tells your system when to run. That's it. It doesn't make the air colder or the system stronger — it just decides when to call for cooling or heat. Because it reads only one spot, where it's placed matters as much as how it's set.
The best settings for our climate
- Summer: Start around 78°F when you're home (the Department of Energy's guideline), and let it drift a few degrees warmer when you're out or asleep. Every degree lower adds run time and cost in 100°F weather.
- Winter: Around 68°F when you're home, cooler when you're away or asleep. Our winters are mild, but cold snaps are real — see winter prep.
- Away for the day: Set warmer (≈82–85°F), don't shut off entirely. A fully hot house works the system harder to recover and lets humidity climb.
- "Auto," not "On": Leave the fan on Auto so it runs only during cooling cycles. Fan on "On" blows room-temperature air constantly and can re-humidify the house.
Programmable vs. smart — which is worth it?
The savings come from setbacks — not cooling an empty house — and any thermostat that automates them helps. A basic programmable thermostat used consistently saves about as much as a smart one. A smart thermostat earns its premium if you'll use the extras: scheduling that adapts to your routine, remote control from your phone, usage reports, and (for some) sensors that average multiple rooms. If you'll just leave it on one temperature, save your money.
"Thermostat problems" that aren't the thermostat
- The house feels uneven. Usually airflow or ductwork, not the thermostat — some rooms simply aren't getting enough air.
- It reads "wrong." A thermostat in direct sun, near a supply vent, or on a hot wall misreads the home. Placement is often the real fix.
- The system won't turn on. Dead thermostat batteries are a common, harmless cause — but so is a tripped breaker or a clogged drain safety switch. See common AC problems.
