HVAC add-ons promise cleaner air — but they do very different things. Every HVAC company has an air-quality add-on to sell, and the pitch usually sounds the same: install this and breathe cleaner air. The honest version is more useful – these products do very different jobs, and only one of them is something nearly every home needs. UV-C lamps keep your equipment clean, whole-home purifiers target what’s moving through your ducts, and good filtration is the quiet foundation that does the most for the least. Here’s the no-upsell breakdown.

What does each air upgrade actually do?

Three different tools get marketed as “air purification,” and the differences matter:

  • Filtration is the filter your system already uses. The right MERV rating captures dust, pollen, and dander every time air circulates. It’s mechanical, proven, and cheap.
  • UV-C light is a lamp mounted near the indoor coil. It shines on the cold, damp coil and drain pan to keep mold and biofilm from growing there. Its main job is keeping your equipment clean.
  • Whole-home air purifiers (like the REME HALO-LED) install in the ductwork and treat air throughout the house – targeting odors, some VOCs, and microbes as air passes by.
  • Standalone ionizers charge particles so they clump and settle. Some are built into other devices; a few can produce ozone, which we’ll flag below.

When does each one earn its keep?

UV-C coil lights are most worth it as a maintenance upgrade. In our long, humid cooling season, the indoor coil and drain pan stay wet for months – perfect conditions for the mold and biofilm that can clog the drain, smell musty, and quietly drag down efficiency. A coil light keeps that surface clean. Just don’t expect it to scrub dust from the air; that’s not what it does.

Whole-home purifiers make the most sense for households with a specific concern – allergies, asthma, lingering cooking or pet odors, or a past mold problem. If someone in the home is sensitive, treating the whole house through the ducts can genuinely help. If no one has any air-quality complaints, the honest answer is that you probably don’t need one.

Filtration is the one everyone needs. The goal is the right MERV for your system – high enough to capture what matters, but not so restrictive that it chokes airflow and strains the blower. In the dusty Hill Country, a good filter changed on schedule does more for your air than any single gadget.

Where these add-ons fall short

The traps to watch for:

  • No single device fixes everything. A coil light won’t filter dust; a purifier won’t fix a humidity problem; an ionizer won’t replace a real filter.
  • Ozone from some ionizers. A few “active” devices generate ozone, a lung irritant. If you consider one, insist on a zero-ozone certification.
  • Paying for a gadget instead of a fix. If your air feels stale because your ducts leak or your filter is wrong, a purifier just masks it. The same money spent on sealing ducts and the right filter does more.

Why does filtration come first?

Because it’s the only one of these that touches all the air, all the time, with no downside when it’s sized right. Every cycle, your filter pulls particles out of the airstream. Add-ons are layered on top of that foundation to target specific problems – they don’t replace it.
