The honest short version: a window unit is the cheap fix for one room, a ductless mini-split is the right tool for a room or addition your ducts can’t reach, and central air is what delivers even, whole-home comfort through the brutal stretch of July. Here’s how they compare, where each one lets you down, and how to tell which fits your space.

What is each system, exactly?

Window AC

A self-contained box that drops into a window or a wall sleeve, with the compressor, coil, and fan all in one unit. It cools the single room it sits in and nothing else. Buy it off the shelf, plug it in, and you’re running – no contractor required.

Ductless mini-split

A two-part system: a small outdoor compressor connected by a thin line set to one or more indoor “heads” mounted on the wall. Each head cools (and heats – most are heat pumps) the zone it’s in, with its own thermostat. No ductwork needed, which is the whole point. (See our deeper guide on ductless mini-splits.)

Central air

The whole-home workhorse: an outdoor condenser and an indoor air handler push conditioned air through your ductwork to every room from a single thermostat. It’s what most Central Texas homes already have, and it’s built to cool the entire house evenly.

When does each one make sense?

  • Window AC – a rental, a single bedroom you only cool at night, a workshop, or a stopgap while you plan a real system. Lowest cost to get cooling today.
  • Mini-split – an addition, a converted garage, a casita, a sunroom, or one stubborn hot room your central system never quite reaches. Also a strong choice for a small home or older house with no usable ducts.
  • Central air – the default for most Leander-area homes that already have ductwork and want consistent comfort in every room. When it’s time to replace, this is usually the most cost-effective whole-home answer.

Where each one falls short

  • Window AC: loud (the compressor runs right there in the room), blocks a window and the view, can be a security and weather-seal weak point, cools unevenly, and has the shortest lifespan of the three. One unit per room adds up fast.
  • Mini-split: there’s a visible indoor head on the wall, and the per-zone cost climbs quickly – cool four rooms and you’re often past the price of central air. Great for a few zones; pricey as a whole-home substitute.
  • Central air: it lives and dies by your ductwork – leaky or undersized ducts cripple even a great system – and it’s whole-home all-or-nothing, so a single thermostat sets the tone for the whole house unless you add zoning.

Is a mini-split better than a window unit?
For almost everything except upfront price, yes. A ductless mini-split is far quieter, much more efficient, cools more evenly, doesn't block a window or weaken its seal, and lasts longer. A window unit only wins on cost and the fact that you can install it yourself. If you need to cool a room for years rather than a single season, a mini-split is usually the better long-term value.
Can I cool a whole house with mini-splits?
You can, but be honest about the math. Whole-home cooling usually means a multi-zone mini-split with an indoor head in most rooms, and the per-zone cost adds up quickly — often to more than central air for the same house. Mini-splits are at their best for additions, casitas, garages, bonus rooms, and homes with no existing ductwork. For a typical ducted Central Texas home, central air is usually the simpler, more cost-effective way to cool everything.
Do I need central air, or will a mini-split do?
If your home already has decent ductwork and you want even comfort everywhere, central air is usually the better fit. If you're trying to fix one or two specific rooms — an addition, a converted garage, a hot upstairs bonus room — a single-zone mini-split is often the smarter, cheaper solution than oversizing or re-running ducts. Which is cheapest to run?
Per unit of cooling delivered, a modern inverter mini-split is typically the most efficient, because it modulates its output and loses no energy to ductwork. A high-efficiency central system is close behind. An older window unit is usually the least efficient. That said, running cost depends on how much space you're cooling — running one window unit can still cost less per month than cooling a whole house, simply because you're conditioning far less square footage.
What about an addition with no ductwork?
That's the classic case for a ductless mini-split. Extending central ductwork into a new addition is often expensive and disruptive, and the existing system may not have the spare capacity to cover the extra load. A single-zone mini-split heats and cools the new space on its own, installs in a day or two, and won't throw off the comfort in the rest of the house.
